WORKING TOGETHER

Nelson Ledges  - Chaplain’s Notes
Well, they did it. Team Psychosis, led by the inimitable Pirate, Kevin Stolicny, convinced me that I really (yes, really) wanted to drive the Hankook Tire, Speedy Pete’s Garage and Motorcycle Museum, Like New Cleaning, Truck Lite, Superior Tank, Carbotech Brake, Go USA Bid, Motorsports Ministries and all our other good sponsors Dodge Omni GLH in the Lamest Day, the 24 Hours of LeMons at Nelson Ledges. It will be my first time driving a race car in anger since the early 1990’s. After Tuesday’s test day, we will find out how much really is. The Pirate and I will split one share in the driving and will also work in the announcer’s booth. With chapel and a wedding on Saturday morning before the race, it should be quite a day.

But before we can get the Hankook Tire, Speedy Pete’s etc, etc Dodge Omni GLH to the track there is work to be done. Dan Moran contributed his ITA Omni that had sitting in a shed for 8 or 9 years, so it needed a little fixing up. So last Saturday, I drove from my home in Willoughby to New Philadelphia, Ohio, to Speedy Pete’s Garage and Motorcycle Museum to help prepare the car. It seemed like I was driving all the way to Old Philadelphia, just in a different direction. After several wrong turns and the scenic tour of downtown New Philly, I made it the garage with the Omni on jack stands out front, loud and proud for all the world to see.
With the appropriate beverages (McDonalds Sweet Tea for me) and donuts, we set to work. Now working on a race car can be trying, but there was something pleasant about spending a beautiful end of summer day working outside down the hill with drivers, the Pirate, Dave Martin, and Speedy’s girlfriend’s son Shane fighting rusty bolts on the spare car while swapping racing stories. Listening to the Buckeyes stomp Toledo 38-0 also helped the make the mood joyful. Topside, drivers Dan Moran and Speedy Pete Smakula were finishing replacing the leaking steering rack.

A tasty lunch of grilled brats furnished and done to perfection by the Pirate proved he is a man of many talents. Later in the afternoon, driver Chad Squires and Junior, the Pirate’s son, brought the rewelded trailer down to the garage. With this kind of preparation(the Pirate is even working out) and a little luck, the Hankook Tire, Speedy Pete’s Garage and Motorcycle Museum, Like New Cleaning, Truck Lite, Superior Tank, Carbotech Brake, Go USA Bid, Motorsports Ministries Dodge Omni will end up in Victory Lane, or maybe not.

As I said last month,  Prayers Will Be Needed!

God Bless,
